staunton public library

staunton, va; third year

My project employs a brick outer wall that sheathes the inner core and draws people in from the sidewalk to the concrete center which contains the mass of the building. The arches cut into the brick wall align with important elements of the inner mass, connecting the two seemingly separate pieces. The brick is a nod to the materiality of the rest of the town while the concrete structure relates itself to it but is truly more for the building itself and what it contains. A large atrium contains a stack system that covers the entire interior south wall of the building and an extensive staircase and walkway system encourages visitors to interact with the structure of the building as well as bringing diluted light into the massive structure through.
