gw carver environmental educational center
roanoke, va; fourth year
This center was built to promote hands-on learning. This is seen through its group work tables, fluid classroom styles, and proximity to the nearby river. Drop-off is protected behind the structure, rather than letting community members be dropped off on the busy road into town. The anchor tenant buildings have separate entrances from the community center so that they can be operated on different schedules when necessary. The anchor tenants’ structure is virtually autonomous from the rest of the structure, giving both tenants and community members privacy from one another.
